5. Else Kathrine Andersen (C3)

BIRTH/CHRISTENING: Hvidbjerg v. Aa parish records (FHL 053,080 item 2; Bk. 5 [1840-1859]; p. 48, # 1); cf. certificate issued 11 Dec 1968. Christened at home 10 Feb; presented in church 14 Mar.
NAME: Christened Else Cathrine Andersen. Cathrine is often spelled with a K, as on Aalborg Conference Emigration List of 1866 (see V.C.Keeler, Some Christensens, p. 157); hence often referred to in the family as Else K. The 1866 Emigration List and the marriage information (Keeler, pp. 157, 170) do not support the tradition that she adopted the surname Christensen from her eventual husband's family while she lived with them as a governess before her marriage. It is more likely (cf. LCT 1966 FGS) that she seems to have eventually followed American practice in using her father's surname as her own. Hence, she sometimes appears in family records as Else K. Christensen or,
married, as Else K. C. Christensen.
